Meta (META), a social media giant, went to court on Monday to challenge the Federal Trade Commission. The case is a landmark antitrust lawsuit that could force Meta to sell Instagram or WhatsApp.
The FTC complaint, originally filed by the FTC in 2021, claims that Meta engaged “in an illegal buy-or bury scheme to maintain their dominance” and acquired “innovative competitors with popular mobile functions that succeeded where Facebook’s offerings fell flat or crumbled.”
If the FTC wins, Meta will be forced to sell its social media platforms such as Instagram or WhatsApp.
Meta CEO Zuckerberg Seeks Trump Administration's Help To Resolve Case
The trial comes a couple weeks after Zuckerberg reportedly visited the White House to seek President Donald Trump's help to resolve the FTC case, according to reporting from the New York Times.
Reports claim that the Meta CEO has asked the administration to help him fight the looming fines of the European Commission.
In a statement released over the weekend by Meta Chief Legal Officer Jennifer Newstead, she said that it was “absurd” that the FTC would try to dismantle a great American firm at the same time as the Administration tries to save TikTok, which is owned by Chinese.
Meta shares dropped about 2% on Monday. The stock is down by 9% for 2025.
