New Data on Inflation and Consumer Sentiment
This week’s economic indicators include updated inflation data, consumer sentiment and housing data, as well as comments from Federal Reserve officials.
The personal consumption expenditures (PCEs) index for the month of February will be released on Friday, after the January report revealed signs that inflation had slowed. But despite recent decreases in the cost-of living measurement, the Fed held interest rates steady during its meeting last weekend. According to the Fed’s recent projections, inflation in 2025 will be higher than the 2.5% annual increase in prices in January.
Consumer surveys are also a major focus this week. Recent reports have shown a decline in confidence among consumers, as well as among small business owners and manufacturers. The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index was released on Tuesday following a sharp drop in last month, while the Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index final results for March were released after it reached a low.
Several housing data releases are scheduled for this week. Home sales remain low amid affordability pressures. The S&P Case-Shiller home price index for January and new home sales data for February are scheduled to come on Tuesday, while Thursday’s pending home sales data for February is expected to deliver a forward-looking view on housing sales.
Market watchers will hear from New York Fed president John Williams, Richmond Fed president Tom Barkin, as well as Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic, who are all expected to make remarks this week.
Reporting Earnings for Dollar Tree, Lululemon & More
The scheduled earnings report for Meme stock GameStop on Tuesday comes after the firm turned a profit in their most recent quarterly report despite posting a decrease in revenue. The company’s most recent update comes after reports that the videogame retailer is considering investing in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTCUSD).
Dollar Tree’s expected financial results on Wednesday follow the retail chain’s better-than-expected performance in the previous quarter. The company’s earnings report comes after several discount retailers recently released positive financial updates.
Lululemon will report its quarterly earnings Thursday, after it raised its sales and earning guidance for the quarter just ended following a successful holiday sales season.
Chewy, an online pet retailer, reported that it was losing customers. At the same time, several high profile investors, such as meme stock hero ‘Roaring Kitty,’ sold shares of the company.
Homebuilder KB Home has scheduled a report on earnings for Monday. The company increased home deliveries in the previous quarter by 17%. The company’s results join a slew of housing market data in the week.
Investors are also likely to be anticipating results from McCormick Spice, Oklo Nuclear, Cintas Uniforms & Business Equipment, Sailpoint Identity Tools, and other companies this week.
